Maki-e lacquer dial

Maki-e

A decorative technique thought to date back to the Nara period. Gold dust and raden (nacre) are embedded into the surface of the lacquer and then polished, giving each dial its luminous depth.

Shibo-urushi

Lacquer mixed with egg white is applied to produce intentionally irregular surfaces. Different colors of lacquer and nacre are layered over them, then the surfaces are polished flat for a textured, painterly finish.
