HAMBURG Automatic silver silver / Field 20 blue

A silver dial takes on whatever you put next to it. Put it next to blue nylon, as the Sternglas HAMBURG Automatic does here, and a large mechanical watch suddenly reads as sportswear.

Hamburg is where Sternglas has designed its watches since 2016, and the HAMBURG collection is the one that says so out loud. The dial follows the grammar of ship's instruments rather than dress watches: numerals rather than batons, a fine outer minute track, Luminova on hands and indices. The screwed caseback is engraved with the city's own map, the Alster and the Speicherstadt included.

This configuration keeps everything in silver tones. A 42 mm polished 316L stainless steel case, a domed satin silver dial, and steel-colored hands, all under double-domed sapphire with anti-reflective coating on both surfaces. The self-winding Miyota 8215 supplies 42 hours of reserve, hacking seconds, hand-winding and a date. Water resistance is 5 bar. The 20 mm Field strap is thin woven nylon in blue and changes over without tools.

It is the least precious way to wear this watch, and probably the most useful one.
