Red on a black dial does one job well: it tells your eye where to look first. The Sternglas MARUS 2.0 uses it sparingly, and pairs the result with a black Hybrid strap that mixes leather and silicone so the watch does not have to be babied.

Sternglas built the MARUS 2.0 as its dive-style automatic, the counterweight to the reduced dress dials the Hamburg brand is better known for. Everything about the case is water-minded: a screw-down crown, double gaskets, a screw-in caseback engraved with a blue whale, and 20 bar of water resistance, which is 200 meters.

The 42 mm case is stainless steel in a silver finish, with a domed sapphire crystal, double anti-reflective coating, and a unidirectional 60-minute bezel for timing anything from a dive to a parking meter. A Seiko/TMI NH35A automatic keeps time at 21,600 vibrations per hour with about 41 hours of reserve and a date at six. Super-LumiNova appears in two tones across the hands, indices and bezel.

The 20 mm strap is the compromise most people actually want: the look of leather, the tolerance of rubber.
