BERLIN Automatic sepia gold / Heritage 20 dark brown

Sepia is the color of a photograph that has been in a drawer for fifty years. Sternglas uses it as a dial color, and on the BERLIN Automatik it does exactly what you would hope.

The BERLIN takes its story from the 1846 rail link between Hamburg and Berlin. Its screwed caseback is engraved with the Berliner Bahnhof, the Hamburg station that served that line from 1857 to 1903. Above it sits a dial drawn to the reduced, Bauhaus-inspired vocabulary the brand has used since 2016.

This one pairs the sepia dial with a gold-tone 38 mm stainless steel case and gold hands, an automatic movement, and a date display. Double-domed sapphire with double anti-reflective coating keeps reflections off the warm dial, and the case is rated to 5 bar. The 20 mm Heritage strap is dark brown cowhide, alligator-embossed and 4 mm thick, on tool-free quick-change spring bars.

Gold, sepia and dark brown belong to the same family of tones, so the whole watch reads as one object rather than three parts.
